WHAT'S ALL THE
BUZZ ABOUT?
WHY SHOULD WE BE SAVING THE BEES?

If bees go extinct, we will not only lose honey and profits, (honey crops are valued at $317.1 million) but also 80% of flowering crops, like pumpkins, apples, almonds, etc.. They also affect the growth of all other plants. If the bees die out, we lose â…“ of our global food production, and the world will look drastically different. Essentially, if the bees die, so do we.

WHAT'S KILLING THE BEES?

A major factor is pesticide use. Pesticides like neonicotinoids are sprayed on crops, and therefore absorbed by the bees, which leads to affected foraging skills and ultimately mortality. Additionally, insecticides are commonly used on agriculture, and they, true to their name, effectively wipe out bee colonies. Herbicides (used to eliminate weeds) limit plant diversity and the food supply for bees. These chemicals lower the bees’ immune systems, which leaves them more susceptible to pathogens and parasites. If we can limit the amount of pesticides used on crops and plants, and make more organic habitats for bees, it would greatly increase their population.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

-
Buy raw, organic honey and farm-raised produce. This supports local hives and bees in the area.
-
Don't squish or kill bees. They won't bother you if you don't bother them
-
Plant flowering plants to give the bees something to pollinate.
-
Set up water baths outside so the bees have clean water to drink.
-
Don’t use pesticides, insecticides or herbicides. These harm the bees.
-
If you see a bee on the ground, give him some sugar water. He might not be dead. Maybe he just needs a pick me up.
-
Consider becoming a beekeeper! This provides a safe place for bees to live.
